Deep Decarbonization Pathways

The Clean Energy Transition Institute (CETI) has produced economy-wide deep decarbonization pathways modeling since its inception to provide blueprints for how Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington policymakers might achieve a low-carbon, clean energy economy over the coming three decades.

Deep decarbonization pathways studies model energy systems to identify the interdependencies, efficiencies, and trade-offs to consider when pursuing deep decarbonization. The studies aim to provide guidance to policymakers, advocates, leaders, and investors on how to accelerate the clean energy transition in the Northwest.

Partnering with Evolved Energy Research, CETI produced the nation’s first four-state, regional decarbonization pathways study in 2019, Meeting the Challenge of Our Time: Pathways to a Clean Energy Future in the Northwest, and subsequently worked with the policymakers in Washington, Montana, and Oregon to develop state-specific analysis.

We are currently engaged in the Net-Zero Northwest project, which will have three outputs: (1) updated deep decarbonization pathways analysis for the four Northwest states that incorporates the potential impact of the Inflation Reduction Act; (2) analysis of the jobs likely to be created or changed in the region; and (3) modeling of the decrease in pollutants due to decarbonization.
